AE crashes partway through a render

The error

AE closes unexpectedly partway through a render, with no specific error text.

Why this happens

Insufficient RAM, outdated software, an unusually heavy comp, or a plugin conflict.

How to fix it

  1. Render via Adobe Media Encoder instead of AE’s Render Queue.
  2. Edit > Purge > All Memory & Disk Cache; reduce CPU cores / disable multiprocessing in preferences.
  3. Update After Effects and your GPU drivers.
